How many actors can say they got their big break playing Tina Turner, with their star only rising from there? With each year and every role, Angela Bassett’s impact grows – her tenacity, her compassion and her self-assurance have inspired generations around the world. 

Bassett has played hugely important real-life Black women ranging from Michelle Obama to Rosa Parks, but also dipped her toe in genre television work as a chameleonic horror icon in American Horror Story, as well as an LAPD patrol sergeant in 9-1-1.

And of course, this year, she did the thing: Angela Bassett put Marvel on the map this year with her second Oscar nomination, for her heart wrenching performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – making the first actor in a Marvel film to to be recognised by the Academy. Who else could have done it? Bassett remains peerless, and we’re proud to celebrate her in our own way, before the Oscars finally catch up.
