In the decade since her first film, SENÕRITA, was released, Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval has established herself as an indie auteur, known for her serene and muted aesthetic. The 2019 Venice Film Festival premiere of her third film LINGUA FRANCA marked the very first time a transgender woman of colour both directed and starred in a film screening in the competition. The remarkable film went on to be acquired in North America by Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY and premiered on Netflix - and you should watch it asap if you haven’t seen it yet! She’s currently in development on her fourth feature, TROPICAL GOTHIC, a sixteenth-century colonial drama that draws inspiration from Hitchcock’s VERTIGO and Campion’s THE PIANO.
